I love to eat strawberries just as nature intended: freshly picked off the plant, warm from the sun, and bursting with juicy sweetness. I also love the ones sold in supermarkets (they are best in early summer), eaten cold right out of the refrigerator. I like them in jam, on top of ice cream or cake, in a salad, with a drizzle of balsamic vinegar... the list goes on.
But sometimes if I'm in the mood for a special treat, I will make these Drunken Strawberries. A little zing of brandy and a dash of sugar takes their sweetness to new heights. It's a great dessert to cap off a romantic meal.
These strawberries can be eaten as-is, or spooned over frozen yogurt or angel food cake for a satisfying, light dessert. Omit the brandy for a non-alcoholic version.
Rinse the strawberries under cool running water and gently pat them dry with a paper towel. De-stem the strawberries by cutting a 1/4-inch slice off of the leafy end. Cut the berries into slices.
In a small bowl combine the berries, sugar, and brandy, and stir it until the sugar dissolves. You can use the berries immediately, or chill them for an hour in the refrigerator to let the flavors blend.
