Drunken Strawberries

I love to eat strawberries just as nature intended: freshly picked off the plant, warm from the sun, and bursting with juicy sweetness. I also love the ones sold in supermarkets (they are best in early summer), eaten cold right out of the refrigerator. I like them in jam, on top of ice cream or cake, in a salad, with a drizzle of balsamic vinegar… the list goes on.

But sometimes if I’m in the mood for a special treat, I will make these Drunken Strawberries. A little zing of brandy and a dash of sugar takes their sweetness to new heights. It’s a great dessert to cap off a romantic meal.

Drunken Strawberries

These strawberries can be eaten as-is, or spooned over frozen yogurt or angel food cake for a satisfying, light dessert. Omit the brandy for a non-alcoholic version.

Ingredients

Instructions

  1. Prepare the berries

Rinse the strawberries under cool running water and gently pat them dry with a paper towel. De-stem the strawberries by cutting a 1/4-inch slice off of the leafy end. Cut the berries into slices.

  2. Stir & serve

In a small bowl combine the berries, sugar, and brandy, and stir it until the sugar dissolves. You can use the berries immediately, or chill them for an hour in the refrigerator to let the flavors blend.

Frequently Asked Questions

Expand All:
Do I have to use brandy?

No! You can substitute a different flavorful alcohol (like rum or Cointreau), or use orange juice instead -- or leave out the liquid altogether. The berries are delicious with just sugar.

Could I add a dash of cinnamon? Or maybe vanilla extract?

Oh my goodness that sounds absolutely delicious! And let me know what you think if you try it!

Can I use a different type of berry?

Of course! Blackberries, blueberries, raspberries... or a combination of your favorites would all be delicious here.

Would frozen berries work?

Yes, but the texture is going to be different than if you use fresh berries. Thawed frozen berries are softer and contain more liquid, so you'll have a lot more "juice" in your final dessert.

What about serving this over ice cream?

Well, I am drooling just thinking about that. Yes, yes, and yes! Drunken Strawberries is DELICIOUS as a topping for ice cream, frozen yogurt, or vegan ice cream.
